Boro Taxis - Hero of the Outer Boroughs
March 8, 2018
When presented with a dataset that contains longitude and latitude information (a lot of it in our case), it is hard to fight the impulse to build a map! The tougher part, will be to figure out what the story I want to tell and how to tell it.
My initial thoughts are that it will be interesting to show the reader the vibe of the city within a day, using taxi activity as a proxy. This is achieved by giving the reader access to the following.
- A slider that allows the reader to toggle and change the hour of the day.
- An option to toggle between pickups and dropoffs.
- The usage of colours to differentiate Boro and Medallion trips.
- A column that summarizes key statistics, such as total number of trips and distance travelled for the hour.
I created a prototype using the Boro trips. There were several things I noticed that did not meet my expectations.
- Toggling the Hour sliderbar did not provide the dynamic experience I wanted due to the load time. This is made worse when we include the Medallion trips.
- It is tough for the reader to visualize the differences between each hour.
Not all is lost though. I found that the Pickup/Dropoff toggle really helped to demonstrate just how important the Boro taxis were to residents in the Outer Boroughs. I decided that this will be the main story of my final plot.
The final plot allows the reader to experiment with various toggles to get a better feel for just how impactful Boro taxis are to serving residents in the Outer Boroughs. While Boro trips make up a small proportion of daily trips, they cover a far larger area than the Medallion taxis.
