Learning Tableau

Learning Tableau
I have never had the opportunity to use Tableau formally for work, but I have lurked around the Tableau Public Gallery and was fascinated and in awe by how people have transformed mundane spreadsheets into a beautiful and succinct mediums for communication.
Learning Styles
Tableau has built a helpful and closely-knit community, and many have written their journey to acquiring their proficiency with the software. I am a kinesthetic learner, and I have found that replicating visualisations and thinking about how I can improve on existing ones is the most efficient and effective means to learn.
Makeover Monday
#MakeoverMonday is a weekly social data project, where a link to a chart and its data is provided and anyone is welcome to rework the chart. The goal is that together, the community can have broader conversations about and with data.
I will be revisiting past Makeover Monday submissions, beginning from the start of 2017. For each makeover, I will attempt the following.
- Critique the approach taken by the original visualisation, and how it has been improved upon.
- Replicate and learn the techniques behind outstanding makeovers
- Create my own visualisation that presents the data from a perspective not covered by any of the makeovers I have seen. It does not matter that my perspective is not the most appropriate, but the key here is to actively think about the various ways that a visualisation can be constructed.
General Concepts
General concepts learnt will be listed below, while techniques specific to a visualisation can be found within its article.
